Investing in the stock market while in Spain can be a smart way to grow your wealth and diversify your savings. Whether you’re a local Spanish or an expat, there are various ways to access the markets. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Understand how the Spanish stock market works

The main stock exchange in Spain is the Bolsa de Madrid, part of the Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME) group. It lists major Spanish companies such as Iberdrola, Santander, Telefónica and Inditex (clothing brand Zara’s parent company).

Spain’s benchmark index, the IBEX 35, tracks the 35 most liquid Spanish companies. Like other global markets, prices on the IBEX fluctuate daily based on company performance, economic data, and global investor sentiment.

Note, the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV) regulates the Spanish markets and ensures investor protection.

You may also choose to expand and buy in global markets through various investment instruments such as an investment fund, ETFs, or by individual stock.

Open a brokerage account

To buy or sell shares, you’ll need a brokerage account. In Spain, you can choose between:

When comparing brokers, check for:

  • Trading fees and commissions

  • Minimum investment amounts

  • Access to international exchanges

  • Tax reporting tools

Many brokers let you start investing with as little as 1€.

Learn about taxes on investments in Spain

Investment income in Spain (including capital gains and dividends) is subject to tax. The rates in 2026 range from 19% to 30%, depending on your total gains.

If you’re a resident, your broker may automatically withhold these taxes. Nonresidents are also taxed on investment income, though tax treaties may reduce rates. Always consult a tax advisor before making large investments.

Consider diversification and long-term strategy

Diversifying your investments across different sectors and countries helps reduce risk. Many new investors start with ETFs or mutual funds, which offer instant diversification and professional management.

You can also invest in international companies or index funds that track markets like the S&P 500 or MSCI World Index. Long-term investing (as opposed to short-term trading) tends to yield more stable returns over time.

Start small and keep learning

If you’re new to investing, start with a small amount and grow your portfolio gradually. Follow financial news, read company reports, and stay informed about market trends. If you have specific financial goals in mind, it’s a good idea to consult a financial advisor to determine your best course of action.

Starting to invest in Spain is easier than ever, thanks to online platforms and transparent regulations. With a clear plan, realistic goals, and a focus on long-term growth, you can build a solid foundation for your financial future.
